The place
Andaluz, on the banks of the Duero
The name is no accident: Lutia was a Celtiberian town believed to have stood on the hill of Santa Lucía, next to the village. The house is built with white stone quarried from that very hill. Andaluz itself owes its name to the Mozarabs who came from al-Andalus to repopulate it, and in 1089 it received the first town charter in the province of Soria. Today it is a hamlet of barely a dozen residents, embraced by the Andaluz and Duero rivers.
A few steps away stand the Romanesque church of San Miguel Arcángel — a National Monument consecrated in 1114, one of Soria's earliest Romanesque works, with its porticoed gallery and the signature of master stonemason Ansur on the doorway —, the Romanesque apse of the Virgen de la Calle, the hermitage of Santa Lucía on the Alto del Risco, and the six-arch bridge over the Duero, Roman in origin and rebuilt in the 16th century. And for the views: the hill's eco-archaeological park, the Portillo viewpoint — home to griffon vultures — and La Dehesa, with its century-old ash trees, where the Andaluz river meets the Duero.
